- It uses R22 or R410A refrigerant, which is becoming more expensive and harder to get
- The compressor has failed more than once in two years
- It uses at least 40% more energy than a modern equivalent
- Its SEER efficiency rating is below 4.0, compared with 6.0 to 8.5 for new systems

What Affects the Price?
- System size: from 2.5kW for a bedroom to 14kW for a large open-plan space
- Number of indoor units: each extra unit adds £1,200 to £2,000
- Pipe length: up to 5 metres is included, then £40 to £60 per extra metre
- Electrical work: upgrading the power supply costs £100 to £300 if needed
- Access: scaffolding or a cherry picker for upper floors adds £200 to £500 a day
- Brand: premium brands such as Daikin and Mitsubishi cost 15% to 30% more than mid-range ones
Safe recovery of the old refrigerant is required by F-Gas rules, and it is always included in our price at no extra charge.
How Much Could a New System Save You?
Modern inverter systems use 30% to 60% less electricity than older non-inverter units made before 2015. A new system with a SEER rating of 6.5 costs about 18p an hour to run at an electricity price of 24.5p per kWh. Typical savings include:
